SA/NT PESA-SPE Golf Day above par

By Jo-Anne (Santos)

They came, they played and they conquered the greens…..well sort of! Just under 100 players registered for the 39th Annual PESA-SPE Golf Tournament on Friday March 16 2018 at the Flagstaff Hill Golf Club. This event is a major fundraiser by members and oil industry sponsors for our charity partner, the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

The day kicked off in the early hours as for the first time in tournament history and with gratitude to new sponsor Firetail, courtesy buses trailed over Adelaide suburbs picking up bleary eyed golfers keenly anticipating the fun time that lay ahead. On arrival at the golf club, all players were treated to a gourmet breakfast expertly cooked and provided by Petrolab while a putting competition was conducted. Andy Pietsch delivered his traditional and inspirational welcome followed by players and buggies dispersing to all part of the course for the 10:30am shot gun start.

The sun shone for most of the morning but the heavens opened up in the afternoon to cool proceedings down. This did not dampen the player’s spirit or determination as they birdied, bogeyed, putted, chipped and sliced their way around the eighteen holes. By the end of the round every participant, although slightly wet, wore a smile and look of satisfaction….or relief!

Ensign, OICS, Petrolab, Firetail, ECS and ERMS kindly fed the masses with an abundance of food and beverages at various pit stops along the course. Ensign and OICS once again impressing, this time with a Mexican themed hole - tacos, beer and a fiesta while Firetail/ECS topped players up with loaded pulled pork fries served from a food van conveniently parked on the 16th hole.

Special mention must be made of the hard working bookies on the par 3 holes – 3, 7, 9, 13 and 14. They did an amazing job hustling the players to part with their hard earned cash, all the while raising much needed funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

The day finished with well-earned drinks at the 19th hole generously provided by Vintage Energy, Roxtec, GPA Engineering and Fendley Consultancy. Dinner followed where the trials and tribulations of the day were recounted albeit by night’s end those drives and putts would have made Adam Scott proud. Prize giving then the hotly contested auction rounded off the evening perfectly.

Numerous opportunities to score a prize were available throughout the day with Halliburton kindly donating a bottle of Grange for nearest the pin on the 3rd hole. While Andy Pietsch believed he was blindly robbed of this prize, Joel Stockill of Santos was the happy recipient who instantaneously appeared to gain several new friends!

Even though golf was the winner on the day, the actual winners of the Ambrose event were:

1St place: Warren Farrington (Ulterra), Rohan Richardson (Santos), Dion Baggio (Kinetic) and Andy Gainsforth (Lucas Drilling)

2nd place: Martin Henderson (Santos), Richard Dry (Santos), Brett Rogers (Santos) and Richard Orlowski (Santos)

3rd place: Mark Duerden (Santos), John Elliott (GPA Engineering), Leigh Schreier (TTS) and David Nelson (SA Water)

PESA-SPE SA branches are extremely proud of their ongoing support to the Royal Flying Doctor Service and this year, the 90th anniversary of the emergency healthcare provider, were honoured to be able to present a cheque for $15000. Thanks to the overwhelming participation of our sponsors and player’s generosity, $1000 was also donated to the PESA/SPE student chapter.

You are invited to keep 15h March 2019 free for the 40th Annual PESA-SPE Golf Day. If you have any questions about next year’s tournament or are keen to support this worthwhile event, please contact Claudia Fintina at Claudia.Fintina@ santos.com
